Get Your Dogs Registered With Greater Chennai Corporation

Chennai: If you have pets and haven’t registered them with the Greater Chennai Corporation, then go to veterinary clinics to get them registered.

Greater Chennai Corporation has devised the initiative to improve its database because several people have pets in their homes. Veterinary Officer J Kamal Hussain stated that the residents could register at the civic body’s veterinary clinics, which are located in Tiruvika Nagar, Nungambakkam, Kannammapettai, and Meenambakka areas.

He stated, “This registration will provide dogs free vaccines at the corporation hospitals and also help follow up on regular deworming of dogs. Presently, there are 50,000 pet dogs, as per our estimates, but only 1,200 people register annually. Our aim is to boost this coverage, so we can have a better network of pets and give them treatment.”

The dogs will get a unique pendant shaped like a coin with an ID. If dogs go missing, now dog owners and people who lost their dogs will easily find them in the nearest corporation center. It would be easy for dog owners to trace them when their dogs are registered. This will be possible because the dog and its owner’s details will be in the database.

Arun Prassanna, an animal Animal welfare activist and rescuer, stated that it is a good move considering that it can help the owners locate their pets when lost. “However, there are some shortcomings. The whole process should be simplified and made digital.” He added that the database must be available online. “We should be able to reunite lost pets with owners.”

Secretary of AGS Colony resident welfare association Geetha Ganesh said the primary problem is that the centers are available only in a few locations across the entire city.

She said, “Transportation of pets is a major problem. I took my pet for registration twice, but the concerned person was not available in the Kannamapet office.”

A resident of Mogappair, RK Srividya, stated that it is discouraging for some people to have over two dogs and cats to renew the registration fee annually.
