Rescue Operation Safely Retrieves 100-Pound German Shepherd from Mt. Hope Summit in Colorado

On Thursday, July 6, Chaffee County Search and Rescue North (CCSAR-N) successfully rescued a dog near the summit of Mt. Hope, Colorado. The organization received an alert regarding a distressed canine at an altitude of approximately 13,600 feet around 2:15 p.m.

The canine in question was Bailey, a robust 100-pound German Shepherd who had accompanied his owner to the peak earlier. However, Bailey had become immobile and was unwilling to continue the descent. Concerned for his own safety and well-being, Bailey’s owner decided to descend alone, leaving Bailey stranded as he was unable to carry the dog down with him.

CCSAR-N promptly utilized the coordinates obtained from a cell phone ping to determine Bailey’s approximate location. Two teams, comprising a total of eight dedicated members, assembled at the Sheep Gulch trailhead and embarked on a challenging seven-mile hike up Mt. Hope’s east ridge. Bailey greeted the team with tail wags when located. CCSAR-N members then carefully carried Bailey down using a dog-sling backpack, with additional assistance provided by another team who utilized a litter to facilitate the descent.

After nearly 12 hours of reaching the summit, Bailey was joyfully reunited with his owner upon reaching the base. CCSAR-N shared on social media that the courageous pup is in good health, and a comprehensive veterinary examination will be conducted at the earliest opportunity.

The organization took this opportunity to remind pet owners of the importance of thoughtful planning to avoid such incidents. While SAR (Search and Rescue) operations primarily focused on human subjects, CCSAR-N expressed their love for animals and willingness to assist whenever possible.

CCSAR-N operates as a team of devoted volunteers, assisting those who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances. Acting at the request of the sheriff’s office, which holds legal authority over all SAR operations within the county, the organization remains dedicated to serving the community in times of need.

As Bailey’s story serves as a testament to the commitment and compassion of the rescue teams, CCSAR-N continues to inspire both animal lovers and adventurers alike with their unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives.
