Colorado, US: During the pandemic, dog adoptions were at an all-time high, but now at a Colorado dog rescue, the reverse is happening. MAMCO stands for Moms and Mutts, is a non-profit organization that supports pregnant and nursing dogs and their pups. Adoption returns are at an all-time high at this rescue organization.
Aron Jones, the executive director, revealed that they have received over 160 returns, with the majority of those same canines adopted during the 2020 pandemic. However, Jones and her colleagues have expressed their dissatisfaction with the number of returns received.
He also stated that they are making headway in locating foster homes for the dogs who have been returned. However, every day, they receive 5 to 6 emails from people requesting returns post-pandemic.
It’s stressful and difficult since supplies are scarce and adoptions are slow. Jones claims that adoptions at MAMCO are at their lowest in three years.
Another Colorado animal shelter, Dumb Friends League, has reported an increase in abandons. Pet owners relocating out of town or into a housing that does not allow them to have dogs are the most prevalent reasons mentioned.
Dumb Friends League housed around 600 and 700 animals annually. That number has gone up significantly to between 800 and 1,000.
Nevertheless, the shelter claims that overwhelming support and adoptive families have recently ensued, bringing the facility closer to its average.
