Pedigree Dogs Being Abandoned By Dog Owners

Recently in Kolkata, Subir Gon, a resident of the Rajarhat had put his 2-year old pedigree dog Labrador on Quikr for sale. The reason given by him for dumping his dog was that he couldn’t afford to spend too much time with the dog.

Real reason behind pedigree dogs being abandoned

Leela Pramanik, a dog lover, recently found a young Dachshund loitering in front of her Hazra house. She tried to locate the owners but couldn’t find them. NGOs and animal activists highlighted the issue of pedigree dogs being abandoned in Kolkata on the rise, recently. They said that owners are abandoning their pets due to rising pet health problems. These health problems in pedigree dog breeds arise due to irresponsible breeding techniques that breeders practice to create dogs that look appealing to their clients.

The experts say that most families who give up their canine companionship are first generation dog keepers. They spend thousands of rupees to buy the dogs without knowing how to take care of them. They don’t understand that getting a dog is a full-time commitment. Dog owners are responsible for the upkeep of the dog. Once you get a dog, they become a part of the family. Taking care of a dog is similar to taking care of a child.

A PFA member said, “there are many families who keep a pet dog just because their friends have them too. Then, there are some who buy in impulse or because there child insists on one. Dog ownership has to be considered a decision same as having a baby of your own.”
