Punjab, India: The local bodies department of Punjab has finally notified pet-dog bylaws for Mohali. They’ve made it mandatory for the residents to get their pups registered and follow other norms related to their upkeep.
The rough estimates suggest about 20,000 pet dogs in the city, but none are registered. Thus, kept without any rules and regulations. Pet registration helps regulate that pets interact with society well and ensures that they are safe and well being domesticated animals.
It was in November 2019, when a woman names Minakshi was awarded six-month jail as she was found guilty for her negligence towards the pet when it bit a neighbor in April 2018. The court also imposed a fine of ₹ 1,500 on the convict who stays on rent in Phase 10. Every year, around 2,000 dog bite cases are reported at the civil hospital, Phase-6, Mohali.
As per the bylaws, a resident will be allowed to keep only two pet dogs at home. The pet dog owners will pay a one-time registration fee of ₹100 and further, ₹100 as the annual renewal fee.
If a pet is found loitering around the street, the animal may be detained and a fine of ₹5,000 will be imposed on the owner. In case of repeated loitering, the fine will increase by ₹10,000.
Apart from these, there will be other penalties that will be imposed as well.
