Essex, England: After being taught a new vocation, a stray Labrador, characterized as “unruly, untrainable, unsociable, impolite, and stubborn,” has proven to be a natural search dog.
Bailey was put up for adoption by Dogs Trust in Loughborough, and Essex Fire Service canine handler Graham Currie came to the rescue.
Since Labradors might be “greedy,” he expressed concern, but Bailey preferred a tennis ball to food. He plans to join the following year.
When Mr. Currie heard about Bailey, he said he had been seeking a new dog to train. So he offered to take Bailey on a six-week trial after examining his drive for a tennis ball and ensuring he had no aggressiveness towards other dogs or people.
The most challenging part was getting Bailey into the van since he connected it with being brought to a complex, but he was trained to correlate it with joy within 24 hours.
He was hesitant to accept a Labrador because they may be hungry and distracted by food. He preferred a springer, cocker, or sprocker spaniel bitch because they are less difficult and simpler to train, but Bailey has that desire and isn’t fussy.
“One of the most natural search dogs I’ve ever seen – he’s like a mountain goat – nothing fazes him, he has no worries or phobias,” he added about the 18-month-old dog.
Although training a search canine can take up to three years, the fire department claimed Bailey might be on the job as early as April next year.
