During a crisis in Port St. Lucie, a man’s best friend, “a dog,” is credited with saving its owner’s life.
Harry Smith, 81, was walking his pet near a creek when his electric scooter lost balance, forcing him to fall and tumble into the water, according to the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
Smith explained that he tried to get back out. However, he went straight back in down the embankment. He couldn’t swim and was really struggling to keep afloat when he started calling for help.
Sarah Jane, Smith’s dog, sensed her owner was in difficulty and required assistance at that point. The dog began barking loudly in an attempt to attract someone’s attention. She was able to attract Edward Suhling’s and his companion Jacob’s interest. They were both at work on the opposite side of the street.
They were able to locate a Port St. Lucie police officer who was passing by. Suhling, Jacob, and the police – all leaped in to help Smith climb back up.
He was treated for his injuries on the scene and was allowed to return home. Smith was pushed home by the officer and St. Lucie County firefighters since his wheelchair was broken.
