Couple Starts Taxi Service For Strays And Pets In Pune

A couple from Pune, Priya Kailad, an animal welfare activist, and her husband Aditya Makharia, an experienced taxi business owner, has started a pet taxi service called Petxi for strays and pet dogs.

Petxi – a taxi service for strays and pet dogs

Around 6 months ago, Priya and Aditya were nursing 12 puppies in their home. They found the puppies abandoned in their office parking lot and decided to foster them and help them get adopted. Priya made sure that each puppy found its forever home.

Aditya, who was already running a taxi business, realised that transporting the puppies from one place to other was quite a daunting task and required a lot of effort and money.

“We reached out to a lot of people but getting them adopted and transporting them was a pain. So, we realised that there is a need for such services. We took two cars from our fleet and converted them into dog-friendly taxis,” said Aditya.

Petxi booking and services

The cab for pets can be booked simply via a call, a WhatsApp or Facebook message. Petxi offers two kinds of services

  • Stray taxi service – Volunteers and NGOs can use this service to transport strays.
  • Pet taxi service – Pet owners can book this service to travel with their pets.

They have ensured comfort of the four-legged traveller by removing the backseat and replacing it with comfortable cushions. Both the cars have first-aid kits to offer immediate treatment to injured animals.

“Pets are very emotional. While transferring them we have to make sure that they are not uncomfortable or anxious. We make sure that our drivers talk to the dogs constantly to make them feel safe,” said Priya.

For additional security and peace of mind, the pet owners can track their pet’s location by GPS.

Priya and Aditya have teamed up with various animal welfare groups in the Pune area to notify them about injured animals. They are also focusing on Animal Birth Control (ABC).

Traveling fares

  • For injured strays:
  • Rs. 12 per kilometre
  • For pets:
  • Rs. 500 for 10 kilometres and one hour
  • Rs. 800 for 20 kilometres and 2 hours, and so on.
  • It also offers outstation transport service as well at Rs. 14 per kilometre
