Recently, a 6-year old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in Shiv Sangam Nagar, Bhopal. The incident happened on Friday evening when the boy was playing on the ground near his house.
The mother of the boy, seeing the dogs attacking him, tried to alarm the neighbors and passerby. She reached the spot and tried to shoo the dogs away. She even got bit by the dogs trying to save the boy. After managing to rescue the boy from the death grip of the dogs with the help of passerby and neighbors, she tried to rush him to the hospital. However, the boy named Sanju bled profusely from the bites and died on the way to the hospital.
Local residents blamed the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the stray dog menace.
Awadhpuri police inspector M L Bhati said that they have contacted the BMC officials, who have launched a drive against stray dogs on a large scale. In February last year, 8 stray dogs mauled an 18-month child to death in Gautam Nagar area in the city. The child was bitten over 200 times.
“It is quite clear that the civic authorities under the current government aren’t doing enough,” said Congress corporator Yogendra Chauhan. He alleged that there is corruption in the implementation of sterilization of stray dogs. He termed it as the chief reason behind such incidents and loss of innocent lives.
Municipal Commissioner B Vijay Dutta commented that the lack of infrastructure along with continued interference and objections from the animal activists have caused difficulties in curbing the menace.
“We are going to upgrade the infrastructure, but this exercise takes time. Budgetary allocations have been enhanced to enhance the infrastructure. We are working on improving the network of dog shelters. Also during our attempts of controlling the population of stray dogs, we face objections from animal activists,” he added.
