To ensure the security of all animals, wildlife care specialists recalled the two gorillas from the enclosure, and members of the Humane Society responded to the call to rescue the Dog.
A stray dog had a lucky escape at San Diego Zoo Safari Park after wandering into a gorilla enclosure and being chased by a silverback.
Visitors to Sunday’s zoo were confused to find a dog inside the gorilla enclosure. Though the crowd of people soon found out the Dog was not supposed to be inside the primate area.
What happened next left all the visitors in shock.
Footage filmed by a visitor showed a dog being chased by two silverback gorillas across the enclosure. As the animals stared down, the person filming the video tried getting the Dog’s attention to help it escape the enclosure.
The stare-down lasts for a few seconds before the Dog dashes in another direction while being chased by the gorilla. At that point, a man is heard shouting “Franklin”.
The Dog managed to reach the fringes of the area, where it stood just a few feet away from the silverback. Luckily, it escaped unharmed after getting threatened.
“It’s believed that the stray dog wandered into the park on his own and managed to get inside the habitat before being spotted,” the San Diego Humane Society said on Facebook.
The zoo staff moved the gorillas into a separate area while three San Diego Humane Society officers leashed the Dog and brought him to safety.
San Diego Zoo staff told Fox 5, San Diego, that the intruder may have been part of a pair of dogs running loose inside the park.
Samantha Clark of the San Diego Humane Society said, “I would imagine the gorilla was probably more trying to get the intruder out of their area, but I’m sure if he had put up a fight — he was probably ready to. ”
