A dog in the UK has become the first to be treated for alcohol addiction. According to reports, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Petey had been feeding on leftover beer bottles and cans littered in his previous owner’s garden. The RSPCA later found the dog in a miserable condition, including being severely malnourished and suffering from a bloated stomach.
Petey was quickly taken into care by the RSPCA, where he was given a thorough medical check-up. It was then that the vets discovered that the dog had an addiction to alcohol. In addition, they found that he was suffering from a condition known as ethyl alcohol toxicosis, which is caused by the consumption of alcohol.
The vets immediately began Petey’s treatment, which involved putting him on a detoxification program to help him overcome his addiction. The therapy included medication and careful monitoring to ensure he had no withdrawal symptoms.
It is highly unusual for a dog to develop an alcohol addiction, and Petey’s case is considered one of the first of its kind. According to the vets who treated him, his condition was caused by the regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol over some time.
Thankfully, Petey responded well to his treatment, and after several weeks of care, he fully recovered. He has since been rehomed with a new owner dedicated to ensuring that he lives a happy and healthy life.
Petey’s case clearly shows how important it is for pet parents to be responsible around them and not leave any harmful substances around them. It also highlights the need for pet owners to be aware of the signs and symptoms of addiction in their pets and seek help if they suspect their pet has a problem.
