The entire violence of this cruelty was captured in a CCTV camera installed at the complex. Shocked local activists and animal lovers posted the video showing how a few men armed with heavy sticks had rushed inside the complex to brutally hit the dog which could only cower and bark at his killers.
According to animal activist
“There were several spectators who were silently witnessing the crime taking place. I want to urge all citizens to at least call the police emergency number ‘100’ any time they witness any crime in public. This can act as a deterrent against those who feel they can get away with murder,” said Goregaon based animal activist Bhavin Gathani.
Another local activist stated: “Immediately after the stray dog was beaten to death in broad daylight, a police FIR was lodged against unknown persons. However, a few residents and animal lovers diligently searched for evidence and were lucky to find the live CCTV footage. This piece of hard evidence was also handed over to the Goregaon policce, leading to the arrest of one person so far.”
Culprit arrested!
An official at Goregaon police station confirmed that one accused man, Kishan R Bagwat (39), was arrested on January 23 for the crime which took place on January 18, under the IPC section 429 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
As per the statement of the accused
The dog had bitten him and some of his co-workers; which is why they reacted to it. However, local activists asserted that there was no bite mark found on him.
“Even if a stray dog barks at someone or bites, it does not give us humans the license to kill it. At the most, it can be reported to the municipal authorities and a sterilization drive can be arranged. Even Supreme Court had recently ordered that stray dogs also have the right to live,” said another member of an animal rights NGO.
Meanwhile, the police officials said that the accused was sent to judicial remand following the arrest. The activists said that they will appeal to the authorities to make a stern example of this case so that humans do not take law in their hands to hurt or kill mute animals.
