A Chinese crested canine, aged seven, emerged victorious in the 2023 Ugliest Dog contest on June 23. Scooter, the champion, received a cash prize of $1,500 and a trophy. For the past 50 years, the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, has hosted this globally recognized event.
Its purpose is to promote dog adoption, highlight remarkable canines that have overcome adversity, and celebrate their unique imperfections.
Scooter, a hairless Chinese Crested dog, was born with deformed hind legs and was rescued by the Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) organization, as reported by Today. Initially adopted by a rescue group member, Scooter spent seven years under his care.
During this time, Linda Elmquist regularly checked on Scooter and ensured he attended necessary medical appointments. When the man could no longer provide for the exceptional canine, Elmquist adopted him.
According to reports, Scooter has been walking on his front legs since puppyhood, and he quickly gets tired as he ages. The dog assumes a tripod-like position to rest, sitting on his hind legs. Elmquist shared that Scooter underwent an evaluation by a physical therapist to acquire a cart.
Although it took some time for him to adapt to the device, he now moves faster and accomplishes tasks he previously could not do, such as exploring his surroundings through sniffing. Elmquist emphasized that aside from his deformity, Scooter is just like any other dog and enjoys Braunschweiger sausage.
Last year, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest resumed after a two-year break due to the pandemic. In 2022, the winner was Mr. Happy Face, a dog sporting a crooked grin and a striking white mohawk. Mr. Happy Face faced challenges such as tumors, neurological issues, a tilted head, and required a diaper. He also struggled to stand upright or walk.
