The ongoing problem of stray dogs causing concern in Trichy City escalated for the residents of Renga Nagar on Vayalur Road when an unidentified individual left an unwell pet dog tethered to a tree outside a house on Monday night. This incident induced panic among the local population. Responding promptly, a team from the Trichy City Corporation health department stepped in and rescued the ailing dog from the 6th Cross Street (east) of Renga Nagar on Tuesday morning.
A veterinarian examines the dog, reveals its sickness, and indicates the initial stages of rabies infection. As a precautionary measure, the dog will be isolated as per the corporation staff.
Perplexed by the incident and unable to identify the owner, the residents reported the situation to the city corporation. Responding promptly, the team who caught the dog rescued the abandoned pet while also capturing nearly 10 stray dogs from the surrounding area in the morning.
Over the past two months, approximately 50 stray dogs had been rescued from Shanmuga Nagar and Renga Nagar, having undergone animal birth control (ABC) and received anit-rabies vaccines (ARV) before being returned to the same area.
Dr S Esther Sheela, joint director of Animal Husbandry in Trichy, also emphasized the responsibility of pet owners. He mentioned that sick pets should be cared for by their owners. “Usually, the pet owners won’t abandon pets due to sickness. If anyone commits such offense, they should be severely warned,” she said.
She also stressed the idea that all pet owners must follow the ARV schedule for their pets. Proper vaccination reduces the risks of rabies infection.
