With dog bite cases in the city on the rise, residents of Panchkula have demanded from officials of the municipal corporation some other solution than just sterilization of dogs. According to them, it has made little impact on stray dog menace in the city.
Members of the resident’s welfare association said that sterilization of stray dogs was not the only solution.
“Will a dog stop biting people or stop running after people post sterilization?” asked S K Seth, a resident of Sector 14.
President of the Citizens Welfare Association S K Nayar said that, “Sterilization of dogs is not the solution to check dog bites. Officials of the MC must do something different to bring changes at the ground level.”
What experts say
Sterilization of stray dogs is not the solution for stopping dog bite cases as it will only help in controlling the birth. Moreover, sterilized dogs tend to become more dangerous as they are not able to meet their satisfaction level and can attack anyone. However, senior MC officials said that they could only do sterilization of dogs as per the Animals Cruelty Act and nothing more. Suggesting an idea, they said that if people would come forward to adopt a dog, it would definitely help the city get rid of stray dogs.
What Mayor has to say about this
Mayor Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia said that, “A dog pound should be made in accordance with government rules. It is not possible for the administration to do so but some NGO can open it and can start a dog pound, where stray dogs can be kept and taken care of and from where local residents can adopt one. Besides, sterilization is not a wastage of public money, it will definitely show the results in near future.”
