After a woman was bitten by a stray dog in North-east Mysuru, MCC control room sent a team to catch ferocious dogs and sterilize them. According to the investigation conducted by MCC, the attacks happened between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday.
Most of the bite cases are registered during the winter season. As most residents in this part of Mysuru are daily-wage earners, they have to leave home early for work or come late at night after work. People usually cover themselves with scarves, sweaters and jackets to protect themselves from the cold. Officials believe that it might be the reason behind frequent dog attacks towards people during winters.
According to members of the Rural Literacy and Health Programme, an NGO, nearly 16 people were bitten in the past month in the region.
MCC vet Dr. SC Suresh claimed that all dog attacks happened at odd hours and this could be because dogs got frightened or provoked when they saw people with covered faces, trying to escape from them, or chasing them away by throwing stones at them.
The north-east part of Mysuru is thickly populated and the surroundings are not very clean. Some people throw leftovers non-veg food on the streets or feed dogs as well, this might have contributed to the stray dog menace in the area.
To address this problem, MCC officials plan to educate the public about dog behavior and prevent dog attacks.
A list of dos and don’ts will be issued soon. “We’d advise people to keep their surroundings clean and stop teasing dogs and feeding them with leftover non-veg food,” they said.
