Animal birth control (ABC) programme takes off in Thrissur. The district panchayat of Thrissur has decided to launch mobile vet clinics to control stray dog menace in the district.
The panchayat programme aims at implanting micro-chips on pet dogs to block the undesirable tendency of some sections of people to dump the aged and unwell dogs in public places,” said Sheela Vijayakumar, president of panchayat.
The state government has agreed to pay 70% of the total cost of the ABC programme, and the three-tier local bodies together must chip in the remaining 30%. The district panchayat has estimated that the ABC programme was likely to cost Rs 4 crore, as per Sheela Vijaykumar.
The district panchayat has earmarked Rs 10 lakhs for the project and the gram panchayats have been asked to allocate Rs. 70,000 each and Rs 1 lakh each by the municipalities, said by Sheela Vijayakumar.
Mobile vet clinics for dogs
The mobile vet clinics for dogs will cover 86 grama panchayats and 11 municipalities in the district. The mobile clinics will be launched in accordance with the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU).
“The clinics would spend three days in each panchayat to sterilize at least 100 dogs in each panchayat. A temporary shed would be set up for the post-operative and preoperative treatment of the dogs,” said Dr. P B Giridas.
The district panchayat president said, “The sterilized dogs would be released in the panchayats from where they had been caught. We will be relying on the local residents to catch the dogs, instead of professional catchers whose number is very limited.”
