Husky Rescued After Spending 23 Days Trapped Under Earthquake Rubble in Turkey

The animal rescuers announced that a rescue team in Turkey successfully pulled a dog out from rubble 22 days after devastating earthquakes leveled buildings throughout southern Turkey and northern Syria.

The video showed workers from Haytap, a Turkish animal rescue agency, clearing an opening for the dog, a Siberian Husky named Alex, through the rubble under a giant collapsed concrete slab and whistling tenderly to draw him out, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu.

The news agency said that the dog’s owner called Haytap after he heard Alex’s barks coming from the rubble of a two-story building in Hatay province.

“Surviving 22 days in that hole without eating or drinking anything is a miracle,” Osman Polatsaid, the Haytap worker who pulled the dog out, told Anadolu.

Polatsaid told the outlet Alex had lost some weight but was generally healthy.

Alex’s rescue is the latest in online videos of pets emerging from the earthquake’s wreckage.

Recovery and rescue efforts continue in the area nearly a month after the first 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit near Gaziantep, Turkey.

The death toll has surpassed 50,000, the United Nations said Tuesday, as relief workers continue to solve an ongoing humanitarian crisis in which thousands lack shelter and basic requirements.
