After a terrifying encounter in the Missouri River in Fort Benton, a one-year-old dog named Haka is finally safe, and on dry land. The pet dog’s owners did everything they could to save the dog, but it was the city’s chief of police who eventually rescued the day.
Haka usually runs on the Chouteau County Fairgrounds. Carlos Rodrigues, Haka’s owner said that he simply used to run in circles, and the dogs run after him. Until one day, when Carlos couldn’t find Haka behind and found it trying to swim to stay afloat in the Missouri River.
Carols looked over the water and saw Haka’s head popping out of the water and was pretty much surrounded by ice.
Rodriguez attempted to rescue Haka by using a tow strap in his side-by-side. The winch cord on the side-by-side was the next alternative, but it didn’t work, so he called his wife Jeannine and asked for a rope. She couldn’t find the rope and rang 911.
When Chief Adam Jacques of the Fort Benton Police Department arrived, he realized he had to act swiftly.
Jacques went down to see where Haka was and carried a life vest along with him for the dog. It was a real challenge to get Haka out of the water. He explained that the dog was tired and just froze. He had to reach to the dog and put the life vest on when he asked the owners to pull the rope to get both of them out of the water.
Haka is now safe and the owners are going to keep a close eye on the dog in the future.
