A cherished dog who became a hero while attempting to shield his owner from lethal bullets is making a sluggish but steady recovery.
Chopper, the dog, is now making progress after being shot three times in the shooting that killed his owner, Nitzi Valencia, 28.
Chopper had gunshot wounds to the face, lower back, and one leg. The facial wound will heal without surgery, but Chopper’s leg wound has been the most difficult to treat. Doctors hope that medicine will be able to cure an infection. If he does not, he may lose his leg.
They won’t have to make that decision for a few weeks. Meanwhile, they say the lovely dog who was prepared to put his life on the line for his master is adjusting to his new life in rehabilitation.
