New Delhi: On Thursday, Delhi Police intervened and saved 14 street dogs from a residence in Greater Kailash, located in south Delhi, following a complaint filed at Greater Kailash police station 1.
The police stated that a woman had been housing these 14 street dogs in her home for the past two to three years, overlooking their basic needs like food and regular care. Officers described her apartment as unclean and lacking hygiene, with the entire staircase leading up to it covered in dog excrement.
Upon receiving the complaint, a case was registered under sections 269 and 291 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) at PS GK-1, and an investigation was initiated, as informed by an officer. The police had suggested the woman reach out to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals/Municipal Corporation of Delhi (SPCA/MCD) to help the dogs’ welfare and health, but she declined.
The police got a search warrant from the court to rescue the malnourished dogs from her residence. The officer stated, “The court issued a search warrant, and the woman was once more asked to deliver the dogs to the SPCA for care. However, she did not cooperate.”
The dogs were transferred to a veterinary hospital in Delhi after the successful rescue. Inside the woman’s flat, it was discovered that all 14 dogs were in a distressing condition. “Under the supervision of veterinarians, the dogs were rescued and carefully transferred to animal vans, which then transported them to a veterinary hospital,” added the officer.
In the presence of her attorney, the accused woman underwent counseling at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), as directed by the police.
