Chandigarh Takes Dog Management Tips From Jaipur

Chandigarh is known as one of the first planned cities of India. Recently, there has been numerous stray dog related incidents in Chandigarh which has spark a debate among the people in tricity.

With growing stray dog population, Chandigarh is now seeking tips from Jaipur on how to manage the stray dogs in the city.

Why Jaipur?

Jaipur has managed to bring down their stray dog population substantially in the last 10 years. The dog bite cases has also went down drastically.
Jaipur was one of the first cities to start an animal birth control programme, based on WHO guidelines, back in 1994.

Stray dog management

VP Singh Badnore, who led a special task force to rehabilitate tigers in Sariska in Rajasthan during 2005-09, said…

“I will not call it a menace, it has to be dog management. When I was MP, I had said two things, dogs and monkeys, they are not menace, but they need to be managed.”

Badnore, who is now Punjab governor and UT administrator said that a conference will be held to discuss the situation of stray dogs in the city. He said there was a need of “dog management.”

“We are going to hold a conference here, in which we will bring all stakeholders together.”

Asha Kumari Jaswal, the mayor of Chandigarh, who along with municipal corporation (MC) commissioner, B Purushartha, met Badnore and discussed various issues pertaining to the city.

“Experts from Jaipur and other places will share their views and throw light on how the stray dog problem can be effectively tackled,” said Jaswal.

To deal with the stray dog issue, the Municipal Corporations of the tricity–Chandigarh, Mohali (Punjab) and Panchkula (Haryana) have joined hands. A joint coordination team will be formed to tackle the stray dog issue, said Jaswal.

Recently, Chandigarh failed to make it to the list of top ten cleanest cities of India in Swachh Sarvekshan 2017. Badnore has asked officials to set things right.
