NAVI MUMBAI: Recently, the animal activists in Mumbai have asked NMMC (Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation) in a letter to stop the cruel and inappropriate methods to catch stray dogs for sterilization purpose.
Improper ways to catch stray dogs
Earlier this week, some Shiravane residents in Navi Mumbai said that they were terrified to see the strays being clumsily trapped with cable-wire graspers and dragged for nearly 500 m behind the van.
“Some dogs started bleeding from the mouth due to the manner in which they were handled. Hence we complained to the authorities,” said Arati Chauhan of Navi Mumbai Animal Protection Cell (NMAPC).
Proper Training to catch stray dogs
“Why can’t NMMC sensitize dog catchers and ensure proper training for more humane dog catching methods? Also, the vans must be kept close to the site so that there is minimum fuss,” said Chauhan, who also addressed the complaint to civic veterinary officer, Vaibhav Zhunzare.
Another city activist said that in case a bigger dog van cannot enter a narrow bylane to catch a stray then perhaps NMMC can rent a smaller vehicle.
“Care should be taken to ensure that the caught dogs are released in the same area after the sterilization to avoid any chaos and fights,” said the activist.
A civic official said that they have noted down NMAPC’s complaint and efforts are being made to improve the dog catching system.
