Guest post!
It’s finally here! The daylight is lasting longer, the temperatures are warming up, and spring is in the air. Now is the perfect time to get outside and experience the great outdoors with your dog.
There are lots of fun outdoor activities to choose from, but what are some activities that your best canine friend can join in? Here are ten activities — traditional and not-so-traditional — that can make any outing with your dog an enjoyable one.
1. Socializing at the local dog park
Many localities now feature town dog parks which provide an excellent opportunity to socialize, for both your pup and you.
Dog parks allow canines to run free in a large fenced area, chase tennis balls, and get their sniff on by encountering other dogs in a healthy, natural manner. It’s also a chance for you to get acquainted with other dog owners and get caught up in local gossip.
2. Swim for it
Swimming is a fabulous cardiovascular exercise that is beneficial for dogs of all ages. Beaches are a definite doggy favorite! Few dogs can resist running in and out of the rolling waves.
Looking for something closer to home? Check out local ponds or lakes, or contact local dog clubs for dock diving times and locations. If your dog is not fond of swimming outdoors, look for a local dog pool that offers private swim sessions.
3. Camping
Camping lets you and your dog connect with nature. Not only do you get to escape from the noise and chaos of everyday life, but your dog has a chance to experience new surroundings and stimulating smells.
Having a canine companion with you on hikes and around the campfire at night is a wonderful way to spend quality time with your four-legged friend.
4. Road trip
This year consider a dog-friendly vacation so you can include your buddy on a trip out of town. It can be very rewarding to have your dog at your side while you are relaxing by the pool or walking along the waterfront.
There are many dog-friendly hotels and vacation packages that are designed specifically to include your pup.
Additionally, if you want something more private, look at the increasing number of vacation rentals that allow dogs, such as condos or cabins.
5. Enter a 5K road race
Do you need some exercise as much or more than your dog? Try entering a local 5K (3.1 miles) road race where dogs are welcome participants.
Many cities now feature 5K races that are dog-oriented, and that offer a special way for you and your dog to spend a day exercising together and maybe even earning a medal!
Are you and you dog new to running? Start slow and look for Pooch to 5K programs online to get safely started on your journey.
6. Agility
Do you own an energetic, competitive, and smart pup? Want to change up your dog’s routine by teaching her something new?
Agility training, which involves guiding a dog off the lead through an obstacle course, is a chance for your dog to exercise his body and his mind while building stronger communication with you. You can find local agility training centers or create your own obstacle course in your backyard.
7. Catch a movie
If you have a drive-in movie theatre nearby, bring your dog along for some summer movie magic. You and your dog can catch a movie while enjoying some time together under the stars. Bring some doggie treats or dog-appropriate ice cream to top off the night with a refreshing dessert!
8. Hiking the trails
Hiking is an ideal way to experience the great outdoors with your dog. Many cities have local hiking trails that you can access with your canine companion.
Check out the state parks in your area as many offer dog-friendly trails exclusively created for dogs and dog owners everywhere.
9. Raise a toast
Fancy a glass of wine with your dog at your side? Then head to your local winery. Many wineries now offer dog-friendly tastings and tours where you can sample some wine while your dog relaxes in the shade.
Other wineries offer dog-friendly hikes to work off the alcohol after you’ve indulged and to let your pup stretch his legs.
10. Take your dog to the ballgame
Fly ball! Many professional and minor league teams now feature at least one game a year when dogs get to “bark at the park.” Take your dog out to the ballgame and have a fun time meeting new people while your dog gets to make new canine friends. You can splurge on hot dogs and crackerjacks while your dog has the experience of a lifetime.
Regardless of what you do, enjoy springtime with your dog at your side!
