Dog owners of Santa Monica will soon be able to first its kind dog shaded picnic area and agility park in Downtown 7th street.
The project’s location will be along the eastern perimeter walls of the Big Blue Bus depot that creates a long linear area for dogs to go off-leash. Space will also include four fenced dog exercise areas for injured/training dogs, small dogs, and large dogs, as well as a picnic area with chairs, tables, and trees.
The idea behind constructing the park at 7th street is to bring the area to notice. It happened when some Big Blue Bus drivers noted feeling quiet and uncomfortable in that area at night. Trash accumulated on the sidewalks, and it wasn’t the most inviting space for drivers to take their break.
The whole idea was to fence in the space and add some cameras. However, nobody thought it to be the best idea. That’s when after brainstorming for new uses for space, they came up with the idea.
The goal is to begin the construction work from 2022 for an opening in the late spring or early summer. They have also included a picnic area and food truck parking designed to be movable in the plan. It creates a flexible space that could be used easily to host events like dog adoption days.
