It all started with a video that surfaced and went viral on social media. A stray dog fondly called “Tibby” by the residents of Kendriya Vihar Society, sector 48, Chandigarh, could be seen getting abused and mishandled by four residents of the society in the video. After 3 days of this video going viral, on 30th January, 2016, these four residents identified as V.K. Bansal (president of Kendriya Vihar Society), VP Saini, Brajesh Kaushal and Omesh were booked by police under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. However, they were granted bail the very same day!
On Sunday, more than hundred animal rights activists and concerned citizens from across the city gathered to protest outside the society. NGOs like Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), People For Animals (PFA), People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Apang Sewa Sanstha and Aawaz joined the protest march along with the Chandigarh residents.
The protesters demanded that the police officials who handled the case and involved with this incident should be suspended. The also demanded to be given the whereabouts of Tibby, but the “on bail” culprits didn’t provide any information on the matter.
