As the number of coronavirus infections rises, the Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show is now the latest event to be delayed or canceled in New York.
The club’s board of governors stated on Wednesday that the 2022 event, which had been slated for late January, would be rescheduled for later in the year. There was no new date given.
“The health and safety of all Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show competitors are crucial,” the organization said in a statement. “As we delay the event until a time if we can properly convene, we thank the community’s ongoing interest and support.”
The dog show, which began in 1877 and now attracts hundreds of contestants from throughout the country, is conducted in February, with preliminary and final rounds staged at Madison Square Garden. It was shifted to June last year and hosted onsite at the Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown, New York, north of the city.
There were no viewers allowed, and humans had to be vaccinated or tested for the first time. Wasabi, a Pekingese, knocked off a whippet, German shorthaired pointer, French bulldog, a Samoyed, an old English sheepdog, and a West Highland white terrier to win the show.
With COVID-19 cases spreading across the United States, the cancellation comes just under 2 weeks after over 8,500 dogs, owners, and handlers gathered in Orlando, Florida for yet another premier U.S. dog show, the American Kennel Club National Championship.
