It was June 18, when Bella disappeared while hiking the Capitol Creek Ditch Trail with Jim and Betsy Chaffin and their extended family including two more dogs. Bella went a bit ahead from Chaffins along with their grandson and other dogs. She somehow got off course, and when she turned around, she did not find anyone and went on an epic journey.
When the family noticed Bella’s missing, they divided into two groups for a search that proved fruitless. Later, when they could not get good results, they reluctantly left Capitol Creek and spent one of the most sleepless nights.
Four weeks later, she was reunited with the family. Bella was found by a ranch worker not far from Capitol Creek Trailhead that is southwest of Old Snowmass.
It feels a bit of a miracle to the family to have their lovely pet home. The 10-month-old dog lost half of her weight from eight to four pounds. She was impaled with two porcupine quills, had matted hair, and was understandably skittish. She is recovering nicely at the Chaffins’ home and is once again friendly as she was before she got lost.
