An animal cruelty case has emerged in Benson, United States, where a 62-year-old woman named Karen Black from Phoenix, Arizona, is now under legal scrutiny. She stands accused of abandoning her elderly, visually impaired dog near a roadside. This incident came to light when the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office discovered the dog wandering near a road exit in Benson, Arizona, approximately 45 miles southeast of Tucson. Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannells and his wife, who happened to come across the small dog on the exit ramp connecting I-10 and Skyline Road, reported the discovery.
Despite numerous attempts by CCSO Animal Control to contact the owner, no response was received. Consequently, Sheriff Dannels and his wife, Nickie, took the distressed dog into their vehicle, as depicted in a photo shared by the Sheriff’s Office on Facebook. On September 6th, Sheriff Dannels and Community Outreach Supervisor Sergeant Ray McNeely followed up on the investigation during a community event in Phoenix, ultimately locating the dog’s owner.
Initially, Karen Black denied any connection to Cochise County but later admitted abandoning the dog by the roadside. As a result, she now faces charges of animal cruelty and is scheduled to appear in a Cochise County court later this month. The elderly dog is currently under the care of a shelter and will remain there until Black’s case reaches a resolution.
