In a gut-wrenching incident, 75 dogs were killed in a fire at a Texas pet resort on 18 September 2021.
At around 11 p.m., twenty firefighters were dispatched to the Ponderosa Pet Resort in Georgetown, Texas. Crews arrived four minutes after receiving a call reporting the fire, but they were unable to save any of the dogs at the kennel.
The facility was already shrouded in smoke from the fire at that point. None of the resort’s 75 canines survived — On Sunday, the Georgetown Fire Department posted on Facebook.
There were no humans who got injured during the fire.
The Georgetown Fire Department’s chief, John Sullivan, told reporters on Sunday that the fire was heart-wrenching for them as the first responders.
“My heart immediately plummeted when I got the address and knew exactly where we were headed because, quite simply, I consider my personal pet to be probably my closest confidant, friend, and the one who doesn’t judge,” Sullivan explained.
The officials said that the facility’s owner was cooperative with the investigation, and the facility will contact the dogs’ families to arrange for the retrieval of their deceased pets.
Sullivan stated that the fire is still being investigated and that he could not speculate on what caused it. He went on to say that he had heard “shock” from the owners of the pets who had been staying at the facility.
