Jamshedpur: “50% of stray dogs sterilized and vaccinated” – This was revealed in a bi-annual stray dog survey conducted in the month of May by Humane Society International (HSI) and Animal Help Foundation (AHF).
Stray Dogs Sterilized
The HSI and AHF team has achieved their goal of ensuring 70% of dogs sterilization and vaccination coverage in four different areas of Jamshedpur, including Baridih (76.8%), Sidhgora (76.6%), Bistupur (70.5%) and Telco (70.4%). Areas like Mango I, Sonari and Golmuri registered 51.3%, 61.2% and 63.4% coverage, respectively. Adityapur and Mango II showed poor coverage of only 12.6% and 17.2% of dogs sterilization respectively. This decreased the steel city’s overall average.
Humane Society International (HSI) and Animal Help Foundation (AHF) organization, which are currently working on a city-wide dog population and rabies management programme, conducts a survey yearly in the month of May and November.
The survey conducted in May focused on the total number of stray dogs sterilized, and the survey that is going to be conducted in November will help in keeping track of the percentage of lactating females. It reflects the effectiveness of the sterilization programme.
“For the purpose of the survey, the city has been divided into nine areas. Teams, each comprising two members, travel on pre-decided tracks and use the open street maps as well as a mobile tracking app to count dogs,” said HSI (ASIA) communication manager Chetasi Kane.

We believe this is a great step towards stray dog welfare and other cities should follow the example of Jamshedpur…
