Zach Hackett, a hiker hailing from Colorado, has earned the title of the hero following his discovery and successful rescue of a missing dog on a remote peak near Silverthorne. The remarkable accomplishment has garnered recognition from the renowned animal rights organization PETA, who will present Hackett with their esteemed Compassion Action Award.
According to information shared in a Facebook post by Summit Lost Pet Rescue, a dog named Riley disappeared from his owner’s residence on April 8. The owner promptly contacted the rescue organization, prompting a thorough search of the surrounding area. Unfortunately, the search efforts found no substantial leads regarding Riley’s whereabouts.
After five weeks and one day, while traversing Peak 4, a prominent mountain reaching an elevation of 12,000 feet near Silverthorne, Hackett’s acute senses detected the sound of soft bark. To his amazement, the source of the sound turned out to be Riley, exhibiting signs of exhaustion and weakness.
As outlined in a news release by PETA, Hackett swiftly came to Riley’s aid, promptly lifting the distressed canine and wrapping him in a windbreaker to shield him from the elements. Commencing a two-hour descent, Hackett adeptly navigated through snowbanks several feet deep.
Hackett gave the rescued dog to Summit Lost Pet Rescue the following day, where Riley was joyously reunited with his relieved owner. The rescue organization reported that Riley had undergone considerable weight loss and displayed a low body temperature; however, a full recovery was anticipated.
In a press statement, PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien commended Hackett’s unwavering commitment to assisting a needy animal, referring to him as Riley’s guardian angel. O’Brien emphasized PETA’s intention to honor Hackett for his heroic efforts and encouraged others to emulate his compassion and take swift action whenever an animal’s well-being is at risk.
