FLOYD COUNTY, Ga – Police have rescued over a dozen dogs that were getting training to fight in a property on Weathington Road.
Officer Kelsi Wade said that “No dog should ever endure some of the training these dogs have gone through,”.
Officer Wade claims that the property was only used to train the dogs and that no one lived there.
The dogs were tied with heavy chains weighing more than 20 pounds and anchored by car axles on the ground. There are some other things used to train the dogs that have been found during the investigation.
Officer Wade claimed, “With a search warrant of the property, we found weighted vests, weighted sleighs, spring poles, and bite sticks.”
There were blue barrels that were placed intentionally to use them as doghouses.
“They’re just close enough to where when the chain reaches out, they almost touch each other, but they don’t get to interact with one another, it helps build the aggression,” said Officer Wade.
A Jacob Driver aged 50 has been arrested by the police accused of training the dogs to fight.
Police have charged 18 felony dog fighting and related conduct and animal cruelty on him.
The dogs were afraid to show up, according to officer Wade.
“They’re not used to people walking up to them with good intentions,” said Officer Wade.
Once officers got close enough to the dogs, they got a glimpse of the dogs’ condition.
“There were a few males on the scene that had scarring on their front legs and chest and facial area, indicating they may have been fought or it may just be from training,” said Officer Wade.
The dogs have been rescued and are now in a safe place, and Officer Wade is hoping they can overcome what they have been through.
“Most of them may be young enough where they will be able to be couch dogs, get treats all of the time, and get true human love and affection. No dog should ever endure the training these dogs have gone through. It’s horrifying, it’s heinous and it’s awful,” said Officer Wade.
