In a daring rescue operation, a dog was saved after plummeting 60 meters (197ft) down a waterfall near Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway. The owner immediately sought help when his Jack Russell terrier fell into the Grey Mare’s Tail around 14:45 on Sunday.
Upon receiving the alert, Moffat Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was notified, and 15 dedicated volunteers promptly arrived at the scene. After locating the dog, Louis, in one of the lower pools, the team devised a meticulous plan using ropes to lower a team member down the waterfall. Carefully securing the dog in an animal rescue bag, they safely transported Louis back to the car park, where it joyfully reunited with its owner.
Despite the significant fall, besides a slight limp, Louis seemed to be in good health.
A spokesperson from Moffat MRT expressed, “Louis was successfully retrieved from the base of the waterfall and was overjoyed to be reunited with his owner. Although not familiar with the area, we provided them with information about a local veterinarian who could assess Louis’ condition after the ordeal. The owner made the right decision by contacting the police, enabling mountain rescue to conduct the search and rescue operation in the safest manner possible. We wish Louis a swift recovery.”
The waterfall in question, known as Grey Mare’s Tail, ranks among the tallest in the United Kingdom, cascading 60 meters from Loch Skeen.
