Animal welfare activists alleged that sterilized stray dogs are being illegally picked up from a particular location and relocated to another area by the local residents and civic authorities in Hyderabad.
“Sun City near Langer Houz in Central Zone had over 15 stray dogs. But in the last few days they have disappeared,” said animal welfare activist.
One of a local resident alleged that around four dogs, including a lost or abandoned pet dog roaming in Kundhanbagh were relocated to the outskirts of the city by residents last month.
After receiving a warning from a community animal protector (CAP), animal welfare activists stopped an attempt Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities to relocate around 10 sterilized stray dogs to different localities in the city illegally.
The activists said that even though it’s against the law, several dogs have already been relocated in the past to different areas by the GHMC. This type of activity is likely to increase dogfights in the area.
According to the residents, the GHMC officials visited the area twice to pick up the dogs and relocated them, but had to get the dogs back to their original location after residents intervened.
Stray dogs are fed by the locals
MS Sujana, a resident of Old Nallakunta, said, “I have been feeding 10 stray dogs for three years. The dogs here are very friendly and affectionate. They never chased or attacked anyone in the locality”.
After a recent news on dog menace in the city, GHMC officials decided to relocate the dogs.
“The article prompted GHMC veterinary officials to relocate operated and vaccinated community dogs from Old Nallakunta, which is a serious offence and is punishable too,” said Paropakari of Humane Society International India.
