7 Best Hairless Dog Breeds You Should Know

One of the most distinguishing features of a dog is its coat. It is something that the owners think about the most. Dog owners usually think about the coat they would want on their pup – long, curly, and short. We tend to spend more time grooming the dog.

You may also pay other people to take care of such work on your behalf. What do you think of the dog breeds that do not have any hair on their bodies? Could they be the ideal solution for you? As far as these hairless dogs are concerned, these special babies are late entrants.

The thing is that these dogs are becoming rather popular these days. If you want to choose from them, there are several options.

Here we talk about the best options you have in the category of hairless dog breeds.

1.     Mexican Hairless dogs

Mexican Hairless dogs

Also referred to as Xoloitzcuintli, the Mexican hairless dogs are the first name that comes to mind. When these dogs are born, they either have a short coat or none. It is an ancient breed that dates back to the time of the Aztecs. Therefore, this dog breed can trace its ancestry to over 1000 years.

Found in three varieties – toy, standard, and miniature. Toy dogs can get up to 14 inches in height, the miniature dogs 18 inches, and the standard 23 inches. Standards are the heaviest and go up to 55 pounds.

They have rectangular bodies that are muscular. Their foreheads are wrinkled, which is a distinctive feature as well. They are alert and loyal and have such great options as guard dogs. However, they are calm enough to be lovely companions for humans.

2.     American Hairless terriers

 American Hairless Terrier

These dogs have descended from the rat terriers. They were bred so that they could catch rodents. If they have the opportunity, they would love to do it. Nowadays, they function as companion dogs.

It was in the 1970s that people chose to breed them. You would find some pups in this breed born with light coats. However, they do not have any coats. They are similar to the rat terriers in terms of their build.

When they grow up, their weight is between 12 and 16 ounces, and in terms of height, they are between 12 and 16 inches. Despite being slender, they possess muscular bodies. Since they are so playful and intelligent, they are great options as family pets.

3.     Peruvian Hairless terrier

These babies are also known as Peruvian Inca orchids. This dog breed originated in Peru, South America. Peruvian Hairless terriers were bred to be loyal watchdogs and accomplished hunters. These tall dogs can grow up to over 25 inches in height. They weigh 55 pounds with lean bodies.

This dog breed is rather sensitive and affectionate. As such, they do not like to be left alone at all. Hence, separation anxiety is one issue you can face when you have them as pets.

This is especially true for pet parents who leave their homes quite often. These are athletic dogs and need quite a lot of exercise. As a result, these dogs are mostly hairless. However, you may encounter some members of the breed who have tufts or short patches of hair on their tail tips, paws, and heads.

4.     Chinese Crested dogs

As such, these dogs can be described more aptly as powderpuff dogs. It means they can either be hairless or have a soft coat of hair. In the same litter, you would get both types of pups. The thing with these dogs is that they are not hairless in the strictest sense of the word.

This breed does have tufts of hair on various parts of their bodies, such as their heads, ears, paws, and tail. This is white-feathery hair that we are talking about over here. Also, the size of these tufts tends to vary.

5.     Abyssinian Sand terriers

These are yet another breed of hairless dogs. They are referred to as African Hairless dogs and thus a rare breed. They have smooth skins and can get up to 20 inches in height, with sleek and long bodies.

It is not that there are no individuals in the breed who do not have any hair on their bodies at all. However, some of them have small tufts of hair on their heads. The thing with these dogs is not many of them are available every year.

6.     Hairless Chihuahua

Do you like a well-known breed but want a pup without any hair on its body? Then, these dogs would be a good choice for you for sure. As far as their popularity in the USA (United States of America) is concerned, Hairless Chihuahua is one of the most popular breeds.

Chihuahuas mostly have hair, but some of them do not. Hairless Chihuahua is just like the cousins of haired ones. Thus, it implies they have the same temperament. However, unlike other hairless dog breeds, Hairless Chihuahua is not bred to be hairless. It is a genetic defect.

7.     Argentine Pila dog

They are just as playful as they are affectionate. These are reasons why they make such excellent pets. Most of them are hairless. However, you can get one with small tufts of hair at the top of their heads.
