In a bid to help Sri Lankan forces to tackle threats of attacks after blasts on Easter Sunday – which left more than 250 dead and over 500 injured – A woman has given her five German Shepherd dogs to the security forces.
A lecturer in an international open university, Dr Shiru Wijemanne, gifted the canines to the Sri Lankan army in the hour of distress and chaos, news agency PTI via Colombo Page reported.
The five German Shepherd, including the parent dog, belong to a single family. The parent dog is two years old and others are six months in age and all the dogs were handed over to Brigadier AN Amarasekara by the lecturer at her home in Narahenpita area.
Dr Wijemanne said that she was impressed by army’s role in detecting the bombs and the drugs and now these dogs are to be trained in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Squadron of SLE or Sri Lanka Engineers for few week before being put to specific roles, the army said.
The army trains dogs for search purposes and then used to track drug consignments and explosives.
