Special Training For Canine Squad

The ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police Force) has started a 24-week training session for canine squad working with the Special Protection Group (SPG.) The training is provided in order to improve skills of police dogs that offer protection to numerous VIPs, including the Prime Minister.

The force now has sent around 20 dogs at the paramilitary’s special dog training school at Bhanu near Chandigarh for training, after getting good results from the training of SPG canines by Indo-Tibetan Border Police dog trainers earlier this year.

Officers involved in the training of dogs said that the SPG is trusting more on sniffing and explosive detection skills of the canine squad to guarantee overall protection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as other protectee’s like ex-prime ministers and their immediate family members.

A batch of SPG’s dogs including German Shepherds and Labradors is currently undertaking the training session at the National Centre for Training of Dogs.

According to the officials, “the dogs are being trained in the special skills of explosives detection and will be trained in VVIP security duties along with their handlers, who are specially chosen SPG personnel for the task.”

They also said that after getting good reviews on the batch of SPG dogs that were trained and handed over to the foremost VIP protection force by ITBP trainers, a new large batch of skilled dogs has been sent in.

K9 team of ITBP is one of the best in this field and have always been demanded by central security agencies whenever there is a high-profile event including VVIPs and foreign dignitaries in the country.

The border guarding force is recognized for introducing the ‘Belgian Malinois’ infantry patrol dogs in India which are being used by central security forces and police units in anti-Naxal operations and similar tasks.
