It was a daring and courageous act by a South Carolina guy who saved his dog from an alligator assault while out on a morning walk.
The man named Bruce Savage took his dog, Hanna, for a morning walk near his house in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, on a trail that included a local pond renowned for holding alligators on August 11.
He discovered Hanna was absent while out for a stroll. Unfortunately, all he noticed as he searched around for her was his dog’s retractable leash in the water.
Bruce said,
“Literally, my whole system shut down. My ears shut down. I couldn’t hear anything except for myself screaming my dog’s name. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
He jumped into the water, where an alligator had already chewed off Hanna’s tail. He fought the alligator and was ultimately able to release Hanna.
Luckily Bruce was not harmed by the alligator, as he merely suffered injuries from being sliced by gravel before fleeing. Hanna also sustained bruises on her backside.
His family called animal control, but the alligator was nowhere to be found. Bruce doubts Hanna will go near water for some time.
According to the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the gator population in the state has expanded to the point where South Carolina now has an alligator hunting season that runs from the second Saturday in September to the second Saturday in October every year.
There have been three fatal alligator attacks in the state since 2016, as well as an uptick in alligator-related injury complaints. As a result, the organization recommends that anybody near a wetland stay at least 10 feet away from the water.
