IIT-Madras To Expel & Fine Hostelers For Feeding Stray Dogs On Premises

A circular has been issued by the students’ hostel of Indian Institute of Technology that states any student found feeding dogs and cats within its premises will be expelled from the facility and they have to pay a fine up to INR 10,000.

The circular was put up on the notice board of Brahmaputra Hostel. The hostel warden AKB Chand said that any student who brings stray dogs or cats inside the premises would be under the scanner. They can be fined and expelled for not following protocols.

This move has been made by the hostel authority after a report of stray dogs attacking endangered blackbucks came to light. Many complaints were also noted made by a section of inmates and staff regarding increasing stray dog menace, especially at nights.

Students who pet the dogs say that the stray dogs are harmless and don’t attack anyone. The situation might have arisen due to the fact that local civic body was unable to control the stray population via sterilization.
