The dog bite cases in Gujarat has grown to epidemic proportions in the last 3-4 months. In fact, in the last two months, there have been over 27,000 dog bites reported and registered all across Gujarat.
The state health department concluded that it is seeing over 1000 dog bite cases per day.
The Bhavnagar district in Saurashtra was the only place where no dog bite cases were reported. Ahmedabad registered over 3500 dog bite complaints which is three times the amount of cases reported from Surat and Vadodra.
The increasing number of dog bite cases is a big concern for the people and the government as it also increases the risk of contracting Rabies. Recently, there have been many news reports that stated the unavailability of the anti-rabies vaccine in government hospitals. GSFCDA (Gujarat State Federation of Chemists and Druggists Association) confirmed that it is not easy to get the vaccines available even in Private hospitals and clinics.
Dogs Get Aggressive
An Ahmedabad-based naturalist named Haseeb Sheikh stated that the period from July to September is usually the mating season of canines and they are known to show aggressive behavior in order to portray dominance.
A senior official at Ahmedabad MC blamed people for the increasing number of stray dogs in the city. According to him, people feeding stray dogs on the streets is one of the key reasons behind the rising of the stray dog population.
