More than 130 shelter pets from Hawaii have been given a second chance for a better life in Oregon, thanks to a collaborative effort involving Southwest Airlines, Greater Good Charities, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, and the Maui Humane Society.
A Southwest Airlines plane departed from Oakland, California. It landed in Maui with essential pet supplies and “Good Packs” containing survival and comfort items such as blankets, t-shirts, socks, flashlights, and hygiene kits.
On Friday, 136 shelter cats and dogs were transported from Maui to Portland in a Boeing 737-800 aircraft cabin in an emergency airlift. This endeavor aimed to help these shelter animals find permanent homes on the mainland.

The animals transferred to Oregon were originally residing in shelters in Maui. Upon arrival in Portland, they will continue their journey toward finding forever homes, as highlighted in a statement from Southwest Airlines.
This airlift created shelter space for the anticipated influx of injured and displaced pets expected to be brought to the Maui Humane Society due to the ongoing wildfires.
To ensure the health and well-being of the shelter pets during the flight, veterinarians collaborated with Greater Good Charities, and a licensed veterinarian accompanied the animals on their journey from Maui to Portland. Southwest Airlines and its employees are committed to supporting local and national relief efforts in response to wildfires and are actively contributing to relief activities in various ways.
