Municipal Corporation is yet to start stray dog’s sterilization in Mohali even through 201 dog bite cases were already reported in the city in the month of June.
Officials at the Civil Hospital said a report on dog bites during June had been sent to the office of the Chief Minister. They said such reports were being sent in routine to the Chief Minister’s office for quite some time. It is learnt that out of the 201 bite cases, 57 were of school children.
The Municipal Corporation had hired a private agency to sterilize stray dogs, but the work has not been started on a regular basis. The agency wanted to get the operating theatre of the civic body upgraded.
A tender for the work was passed on June 23, but upgrading is still going on. Proper sterilization will start only after the required changes are carried out.
On a trial basis only 15 stray dogs were sterilized last week.
Kuljit Singh Bedi, Municipal councilor, said dog bites were a serious matter and the corporation should take it up on a priority basis. He said sterilization had been stopped for quite some time.
A penalty should be imposed on the contractor concerned for not doing it as required by the civic body.
