Chandigarh MC To Specify Areas For Feeding Stray Dogs

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has issued directions for residents that will allow them to feed stray dogs at particular areas specified by the MC. The rule will be implemented in one sector.

The municipal commissioner, Kamal Kishore Yadav has issued these directions to Medical Officer of Health (MOH) on June 20, 2018, during the emergency meeting of the monitoring committee of Animal Birth Control (ABC) (dogs).

To discuss further course of action, a meeting of the Tricity MC commissioners and nodal officers of ABC programme will be held by Chandigarh MC on July 3, 2018 in the MC’s conference hall.

Kamal Kishore Yadav said, “During the discussion, we learned that feeding the stray dogs is one of the major problems. So directions have been issued to MOH to specify an area in each sector in resonance with residents welfare association (RWA) where residents will be allowed to feed stray dogs.”

In the meeting, various issues were discussed which included creating awareness among masses about sharing responsibility and involvement of citizens. Yadav asked concerned officers to chalk out a comprehensive plan to create awareness regarding ABC.

He also asked the animal husbandry doctors about the status of the census of dogs in Chandigarh and the members informed him that preparation of digital census is in progress which will be completed by August-September this year. Teams have been formed for that purpose, they said.

The commissioner asked the MOH to amend terms and conditions of tenders to be floated regarding dog sterilization. He said the tentative figure of leftover dogs and manpower required for operating should be specified in the conditions. He instructed the committee members to visit the site and put up a report regarding renovation work, facilities provided at the site and required facilities to support the technical functions. He said the basic hygiene and proper cleanliness, besides provision of security and CCTV cameras be ensured at the dog sterilization centre.

He added that proper verification of dog-bite cases in dispensaries needs to be recorded to bring clarity to the data as most of the dog bite cases are reported from neighbouring cities.
