Belgian Sheepdog ‘Soleil’ Crowned Best in Show at the 2025 National Dog Show

Belgian Sheepdog ‘Soleil’ Crowned Best in Show at the 2025 National Dog Show

The 2025 National Dog Show, which is a well-known Thanksgiving tradition in the United States, named a new Best in Show winner. Soleil, a 6-year-old Belgian Sheepdog, earned the top title. Judges and viewers noted her calm movement, control, and shiny black coat.

The event was held on November 27 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. There were 201 breeds and almost 2,000 dogs competing for Best in Show. Soleil was recognized early on for her performance and was chosen over many accomplished dogs from across the country.

A Final Round Filled With Champions

This year, the final group of dogs was especially strong. Each dog in the Best in Show round was already ranked number one in its group in the United States.

Among Soleil’s biggest competitors were:

  • Comet, the legendary Shih Tzu known for an incredible 143 Best in Show titles
  • Neil, a Bichon Frise with 42 major wins
  • Baby Joe, the top-ranked Miniature Schnauzer

Soleil stood out in the final round because of her steady movement and confident presence. Her handler, Daniel Martin, said after the win, “Soleil is a true professional. She loves the energy of the crowd and the excitement of the ring. Today is a fantastic day for us.”

A Powerful Moment for Female Dogs in the Show Ring

Dog show expert David Frei said that the result showed the importance of showmanship. He explained that the finalists were very similar in physical quality, so the judges focused on each dog’s attitude and presence.

Frei also noted that Soleil’s performance was especially notable because female dogs do not win as often in the show ring. Her confidence and presence helped her stand out among the finalists.

The Belgian Sheepdog: Smart, Sensitive, and Stunning

Soleil is a Belgian Sheepdog, also known as the Groenendael, outside the United States. The American Kennel Club describes this breed as intelligent, sensitive, and deeply connected to their human companions.

Belgian Sheepdogs are highly trainable herding dogs with a serious yet affectionate temperament. Soleil highlighted all these qualities during the show, moving seamlessly in sync with her handler and charming both judges and spectators.

A Thanksgiving Tradition That Continues to Grow

The National Dog Show has been held since 1879 and has aired as a Thanksgiving TV special since 2002. This year, an estimated 20 million viewers tuned in to watch the competition and witness Soleil’s rise to the top.

With her victory, Soleil now joins the list of memorable champions in the show’s long history—earning not just a title, but the hearts of dog lovers across the country.
