Recently, two dog events brought together animal lovers from all over the tricity. The events took place last Sunday to create awareness towards animal welfare and for their adoption. The Animal Welfare Association (AWA) organized an Adoptathon and Awareness Camp at the Town Park in Sector 5, Panchkula.
The event’s aim was to improve human – dog relationship and make people aware on how Indian dogs can be a pet as good as a breed dog. The event also gave information about how to tackle dog bites or avoid them, how to handle an aggressive dog and update on Animal Laws and puppy mills. (For breed dogs)
Adoption event
“We have had much better response compared to last year. 17 out of 35 pups have been adopted this time. Some have been handed over and some we will after doing house checks,” said Meenakshi Mahapatra of PCFA.
This was the second such event organized by the group, the first being organized in February where nine pups were adopted.
“The response this time shows a drastic change in the thinking of people. Around 150 people showed up for this event.”
During the camp, visitors were also made aware about the benefits of adopting puppies of Indian breeds. They were told that anatomy and physiology of stray dogs are best suited for Indian climatic conditions as compared to pedigree dogs. This results in the frequency of dogs falling ill lesser.
“This time people came with their families and brought along their friends, which was a positive sign. Most of the youngsters, who wished to adopt but couldn’t for some reason, turned to volunteering, for which we had kept special forms,”Meenakshi shared.
