In the mid-19th century, these dogs made their first appearance in Paris. They were probably created by mixing ratter dogs found locally. Toy bulldogs originated in England and were bred as companions and lapdogs. They are fiercely loyal dogs attached to their guardians.

In 1835, Toy bulldogs started to become less popular in England. It was primarily because of the ban on bull-baiting, the main occupation these dogs were used for. At this time, the Industrial Revolution took away the jobs of the lace workers of Nottingham.

They started to settle at Normandy in France. They took their Toy Bulldogs and bred them with the small breeds found locally. Soon they became rather fashionable and were in high demand, especially among the ladies of the high society in France and the prostitutes of Paris.

It also helped that artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas featured them in their paintings. It was around 1885 that this breed was imported into the USA. During that time, a breeding program started in the country. They were popular among the elite of America and owned by families such as the Morgans and Rockefellers.
