Thousands of canines are sent to a dog meat festival in Yulin, China, each year for the sole pleasure of eating. Now, in Toronto, there is a method to help these poor dogs.
No Dogs Left Behind (NDLB), a global animal welfare organization, has just announced the opening of its first safe house in Toronto. This is NDLB’s first set up outside of East Asia of its kind.

The American charity was not the first to assist in rescue canines from Yulin’s meat festival. Magnus Khun Purdy, a Toronto citizen, founded the A Better Spot Foundation and is now hosting a raffle to raise funds for it.
NDLB, a nonprofit group established in the United States, makes it easier for individuals on the field in East Asia.
Jeff Beri, the organization’s founder, and president saved pups from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, as well as butcheries, dog meat vans, wet markets, and underground dog smugglers, with the support of numerous local volunteers.
The dogs are then transported to one of the organization’s three East Asian sanctuaries, where they get medical attention, nutritional aid, and rehab. The dogs are cared for in the NDLB’s sanctuaries until they are placed into loving homes in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.
The decision to create a safe house in Toronto arose when the group, which is based in East Asia but has its headquarters in New York, was unable to import canines from China into the United States.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has placed an official suspension on importing canines from 113 nations, notably China.
Kennels, indoor and outdoor play areas, and vast parks will be available for the dogs to enjoy at the Safe House during the day. When the dogs are ultimately reunited with their sponsors, a big part of the operation will focus on socializing them to properly acclimate and be ready to be a part of a family.
