Pit Bull Ban Regulations Eased In Ontario, Canada

Doug Ford’s government has relaxed laws surrounding the region’s pit bull ban, allowing confiscated canines that resemble the banned species to be released – and numerous dog owners claim the premier has signaled he’ll go much farther.

Pit bulls were banned in Ontario in 2005 after two of them assaulted a man in Toronto. Many animal lovers were outraged by the law, claiming that it penalized canines rather than their owners.

Several pet parents have protested to the premier about their canines being confiscated by animal control agencies on the grounds of being pit bulls in the last month.

The premier’s office declined to comment, but a minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs spokeswoman stated that recent regulatory amendments now allow animals taken purely based on their purported breed to be restored to their owners until a breed designation is carried out.

Ontarians, according to Jack Sullivan, expect policies that protect people and animals from being based on evidence. Therefore, the government is restoring detained pets that have not caused harm to their owners under specified terms and conditions by making this move now.

Several dog owners claimed the premier became involved in several cases over the past month, promising to repeal the pit bull ban, also known as breed-specific law, located in the Dog Owners’ Liability Act.

Pitbull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, and American pit bull terriers are all classified pit bulls and are now listed as forbidden canines in the act.

The law also states that any dog “that has an appearance and physical attributes that are substantially similar to those” four types of dogs is prohibited, a provision that many dog owners and activists find troubling.

Ford was empathetic, according to Wheeler, and informed her he used to own two American Staffordshire pit bulls, which the premier’s office corroborated.

The regulatory modifications went into effect on Monday.
