Pet Dogs And Bachelors Not Allowed In Housing Societies In NCR

Recently, the group housing societies of Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad are not allowing bachelors, foreigners (especially people of color) or a pet owners to rent an apartment.

People who fall under these categories will find it hard to rent an apartment in the housing societies of Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad!

“About 80% of group housing and multi-storey societies in Noida and Ghaziabad do not allow bachelors, single women, and in some instances pet owners, to rent flats,” a property dealer said on condition of anonymity – Source TOI

Gurgaon

In Gurgaon, “most societies are shutting doors on single tenants. With 75% of the tenant population in the city being single, there will be a huge demand-supply gap,” says Sitanshu Gupta, who runs Flathood, a brokerage firm.

Singles are seen as trouble

“We stopped renting flats to singles as they played loud music, smoked and drank in common areas, partied at odd hours, and became a nuisance in many other ways,” a resident of Amrapali Sapphire in Noida Sector 45 said on condition of anonymity. – Source TOI

A sign at the society entrance makes it clear that singles are not welcome.

Foreigners face harsher scrutiny. Not only are their passport and visa checked, flats are let to them mostly on company lease.

 “People of color, face a stronger bias than Whites,” a Noida broker said.

Arbitrary rules for pet owners

There are certain terms and conditions for pet owners, for example – pet owners in Supertech Livingston were told to follow 10 rules, including muzzling their dogs in public, keeping a distance from other residents, and assuming full liability in case of a dog attack. Moreover, tenants who wanted to keep pets were asked to seek the permission of their neighbors.

A Senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan, specializing in public interest litigations believes that this kind of discriminatory and racist attitude of Resident welfare associations are unjustified.

“There are no provisions in law that allow any resident body or RWA to exercise such arbitrary rules.” They have no right discriminate among on renters based on such obnoxious parameters.

The Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA) has also opposed such arbitrary rules created by these RWA’s.

“We in FONRWA clearly maintain that all residents are welcome — singles, foreigners, white, black, men, women — all are our residents and most welcome to have accommodation in NCR, including Noida,” said FONRWA president N P Singh.

“If any RWA or resident body exercises random rules of discrimination based on gender, nationality or class, etc, it is illegal and liable for action if we receive complaints against it.”
